Here are some important features & tips:
-
Count (stitches per inch or threads per cm): The higher the count, the finer the fabric. For example: 14-count Aida is easier for larger stitches; a 28-count linen/evenweave may require stitching “over 2 threads” to match 14-count size.
-
Material & feel: Linen has a natural slub/texture because of flax threads; evenweave tends to be more regular; Aida has distinct holes. Some stitchers prefer evenweave or linen for their look and feel.
-
Usage & experience: If you’re newer, Aida may be more forgiving. Some stitchers report moving to evenweave/linen because they like the feel, but it can be more finicky.
-
Washability / care: Make sure the fabric’s care instructions match your thread and project. E.g., DMC linen: “wash at 40°C with mild detergent, iron on setting
-
Width / size: If you have a large pattern, check your fabric size; narrow “bands” may limit how much area you can stitch.
